BostonKayakGuy has long been a fan of TripAdvisor, the online travel site propelled by travellers who offer their reviews and comments on hotels, destinations, and restaurants.
It’s a fabulous resource when you’re planning a trip or want to see what others have to say about a restaurant or hotel you’re considering.
Bora Bora: Glorious sunset
And the contributors’ photos give a far better picture (no pun intended..well, maybe) of a location than the perfectly staged, photoshopped resort photos used to market accommodations and amenities.
TripAdvisor also includes forums where fellow travellers can meet, ask questions, and solicit advice.
Turns out that BostonKayakGuy has also made plenty of his own contributions over the years to TripAdvisor as he has lauded and panned the sublime and the trite.
And now it’s time to give props to TripAdvisor for another endeavor…a unique opportunity that they presented to its many die-hard fans to vote for the particular philanthropic organization that they would like to see benefit from TripAdvisor’s donation of a total of $1million to 5 travel-related non-profit institutions.
As a result of this process, TripAdvisor plans to donate:
$ 54,000 National Geographic Society
$137,000 Nature Conservancy
$347,000 Save the Children
$ 70,000 Conservation International
$392,000 Doctors Without Borders
“TripAdvisor posted a profit of $129 million on $260 million in revenue for the 12 months to June 30, 200,” according to published reports. The company was acquired by InterActiveCorp for $210 million in 2004. IAC has invested approximately $400 million in the company, expanding the work force from less than 50 people to 434 employees.
Structured under IAC’s Expedia unit, TripAdvisor is based in Newton, MA.
“In the midst of the United States’ historic presidential election, it was great to see such strong voter turnout to help nonprofit organizations,” said Steve Kaufer, founder and CEO of TripAdvisor. “Thanks to the guidance of people around the world who participated in this ‘democratic philanthropy’ initiative, each of these nonprofits is a winner.”
The inspiration for the initiative name “More than Footprints” comes from the popular travel mantra, “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” TripAdvisor believes people can leave more than footprints behind when traveling – by making a difference in the places they visit. TripAdvisor-branded sites make up the largest travel community in the world, with more than 25 million monthly visitors*, nine million registered members and 20 million reviews and opinions. Featuring real advice from real travelers, TripAdvisor-branded sites cover 300,000+ hotels and attractions.
