Natick High School 2012 SAT Scores – Mark Milestone

Take a bow Natick!

The 2012 SAT scores have just been released and Natick students exceeded state averages in the latest results!

The 284 Natick students who took the SATs this year achieved scores of 535 in critical reading, 563 in math, and 531 in writing.

The statewide average is 506 for reading, 523 for math, and 500 for writing.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said in a prepared statement that Massachusetts public high school students have made a 12-point gain in math over the past decade, and that overall student participation in the test has increased.

While the 2012 average score fell in reading from 2011, this year’s scores contributed to a fine showing by greater Boston’s west suburban schools.

Wellesley, Weston, and Needham also marked incredibly strong performances, with these communities achieving top spots in scores for the entire state.  Wellesley led Massachusetts’ students performance “with a combined average score of 1881, according to data released Tuesday by the College Board, which administers the SATs. Acton-Boxborough Regional had the second highest overall score at 1876.”

Needham Real Estate: Tear Downs Make Way For New Construction

New construction and the associated tear down of older and smaller homes is alive and well in Needham.

For the eight month period from 1/1/2011 to 8/31/2011 twenty nine new construction single family homes were sold in Needham with an average sale price of $1,312,956. The 29 homes represented 14.3% of the total number of homes sold.

For the same eight month period in 2012 the number of new construction single family home sales increased by 20.7% to 35 homes. The total number of homes also increased proportionally so that new construction represented 14.8% of sales.

The average sale price of new construction homes and the corresponding per square foot price remained stable in Needham for this period.

Fast forward 30 years and at this rate, Needham may not have any smaller/older homes left to tear down.

What do you think about this trend?

Spring Color Awash at the Institute of Contemporary Art

One of my fav design blogs over at New England Home Magazine is highlighting the smashing exhibition “Figuring Color” over at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

With this wonderful spring weather, arousing the senses with this amazing display of color and its mood enhancing qualities is a fun activity for date night or if you’re considering a new palette for your home and are looking for inspiration.

And take note: the Charline von Heyl exhibit will open next week at the ICA, marking the artist’s first showing in Boston!

If winter has left you feeling starved for color, you may be contemplating a few new throw pillows for the sofa or perhaps some fresh paint colors. But for those who need color therapy on a grander scale, a visit to Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art could be just the thing.

At the ICA’s latest exhibition, Figuring Color, you will see weird, wonderful and decidedly colorful works in four different mediums—outlandish ceramics by Kathy Butterly, off-kilter furniture by Ray McMakin, thought-provoking installations by Felix Gonzalez-Torres and (my personal favorite) exuberant paintings by Sue Williams. But be warned: it’s a far cry from daffodils and Marimekko prints. The artists use color and form as vehicles to explore ideas about the body, some of which aren’t so bright and cheery.

Red Sox Nation’s Kevin Youkilis Puts Ring On Tom Brady’s Sis Julie

Oh…the birds are singing, the fans are swooning, and the Brady Bunch – the athletic, awesome brood to which New England Patriots Tom Brady belongs – are once again clamoring with joy as they celebrate the news that sister Julie, a teacher in California and mother of 5 year old Jordan, has recently become engaged to Red Sox slugger Kevin Youkilis!

Royal Sports Wedding For Boston Fans - Julie Brady and Kevin Youkilis

As the week of dashed dreams winds up, the new vision of one of the country’s most elite sports families adding yet another professional Boston ball player to the roster, has sports fans and media types alike giddy with excitement.

And for Boston sports fanatics, what better marriage than one that joins the dearly beloved of BOTH the Red Sox and the Pats!  Be still my heart!

From all reports, the two have been dating quietly for over a year.  Plans call for Julie and Jordan to pull up stakes on the West Coast and join the three-time All-Star and  two-time World Champion Youkilis in Florida.

Julie of course was a soccer standout at  St. Mary’s College (Moraga, Calif.)

And while Youk’s performance last season for the Sox was certainly lackluster (Youk hit just .258 in 120 games for a disappointing Red Sox team,) the wily Greek seems to have hit one out of the park with news of his engagement!

Congrats to the happy couple!  And…play ball!
