End of a gilded era — that’s what will happen when the mansion that inspired the ‘Great Gatsby‘ by F. Scott Fitzgerald is razed, starting today in Sands Point, New York.

The 21,000 sq foot mansion is a timeless American classic, and served as the centerpiece in the 1974 movie ‘The Great Gatsby,’ starring Robert Redford.

The oceanfront property now costs approximately $5,000 per day for the family who owns the homestead and these high costs contributed to the current state of disrepair.

The land will be divided into smaller parcels, bringing the ‘Great Gatsby’ shoreline to a number of families, expected to purchase the reconfigured landscape.
