The news that Ann Taylor, a 14 year mainstay in downtown Wellesley is closing, came as a shock to its many customers.

While it’s been obvious that their business has been off the past 2 years, (and the quality of their items was on a downslide,) no one expected the retailer to be the latest in a series of retail departures from Wellesley.

It was easy to drop in and pick up an outfit; something that everyone did at one time or another.

And it was the site where one soon-to-be divorcee decided to buy each and every item in each and every color, as a fond farewell to her soon-to-be ex husband’s credit card.

Following on the heels of “A Different Drummer,” “The Body Shop,” “College Pizza,” “Bobby’s Grille,”  “Waterman’s Funeral Home”and “Wellesley Trappings” departing from Wellesley,  and suggestions that Clark’s and Rosie’s Bakery are closing,  it leaves a gaping whole in the town’s downtown makeup.

The economic impact of the recession has taken aim at Wellesley, and frankly this shakeup will dramatically change the ambience and configuration of the town’s retail outposts forever.
