Steven Hiersche has been named the new Superintendent of the Framingham Schools System.
Metrowest’s largest school system with over 8,000 students and a budget of $90 million has been without a permanent appointment for superintendent for over the past 2 years.
The interim position has been admirably helmed by Gene Thayer.
Hiersche currently holds the superintendent position at Watertown Public Schools, where he has been since 2004.
His background includes the same supervisory post in Plymouth Schools for 6 years, and a 3 year stint as superintendent at Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union.
The graduate of Westfield State College, Ed. and Argosy University Sarasota, M.Ed., is well known for his technology expertise, particularly integrating technology into instruction, and data and information management.
Adroitness at union negotiation is one of the hallmarks of his leadership proficiency. Hiersche has been hailed for his abilities in collaboration among school officials and the community. Reportedly he is excited about exploring “potential partnership opportunities with Framingham State College.”
He has also been cited for his capability in developing multiyear budgets, and is expected to play a role in the development of Framingham’s 2010 school budget.
According to a report in the Metrowest Daily News:
Hiersche said Framingham’s schools are in good shape, but they face challenging budgets in the coming years. He said any changes to the schools shouldn’t undermine the system, and officials need to consider steps that will help the district improve education for students in the 21st century.
“I think people are optimistic, despite the financial” issues, Hiersche said.

Dr. Hiersche’s background also includes positions as a Middle and High School principal, as well as a teacher in mathematics and computer science.
Hiersche is expected to take the reins of the Framingham Schools in July.
The Framingham School Committee voted unanimously on Dr. Hiersche’s selection.
