For the first time ever, since Freddie Mac began its weekly rate survey in 1971, the national average rate on the 30-year loan fell to 4.96% in the week ending Jan. 15.
Mortgage rates could remain low at least until the summer,” according to Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.com.
“The outlook is very positive that these low mortgage rates will likely persist at least through the first half of the year. That is the timetable laid out from the Federal Reserve for pumping up to $500 billion in mortgage-backed bonds,” McBride said.
