  1. I thought Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were supposed to be the rock-solid bastions of the mortgage industry. But then, I also thought Bear Stearns and Lehman Bros. were unshakable securities firms. And, right up until it ran out of advertising money, Wachovia billed itself as a financial powerhouse.
