At a time when Wellesley High School is being heavily scrutinized as it goes through the process of trying to gain approval as well as financing for the building of a new high school facility, word comes that WHS has been placed on warning status by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Public Secondary Schools.

According to an Elana Zak report on WickedLocal.com, “The school needs to work on curriculum; assessment of student learning; and community resources for learning, according to the commission’s six-page letter.”

The action putting Wellesley High on “warning” status was due to be discussed at the Nov. 12 school committee meeting, but was not put on the agenda until the Committee’s last meeting on Nov. 18.

One would think that school administrators would have made every effort to ensure that all facets of Wellesley High School, in terms of curriculum and accreditation issues,  were in top order, particularly in preparation for securing financing and state approval for the project.

Facilities shortcomings were also cited, and are addressed in the plan for a new high school.

NEASC recommendations designate steps needed for improvement.

A town-wide vote on the project is scheduled for Dec.9.

Wellesley High School was ranked 70th in the nation in “college readiness” last year by US News and World Reports.

A warning, according to the Commission on Public Secondary Schools Handbook, does not affect a school’s accreditation status. If, however, the school fails to resolve the identified problems, it can be placed on probation. In that situation, a school can lose its accreditation if it continues to not meet the NEASC’s recommendations.
