During a “full contact” scrimmage last night in Lakeville, a Holliston HS junior was fatally injured. Joey Larracey died at the hospital after being hit in the chest during a game at Apponequet Regional High School. Holliston High School is making grief counseling services available to its students.
Last night Joey’s teammates visited with his family and were followed this morning by HS Principal Cournoyer and Holliston Superintendent Bradford Jackson.
“Any tragedy of this magnitude will have a profound effect” on the school and the community,” Jackson said. “It’s going to be a long and difficult process for all of us.”
According to a report in the MetroWest Daily News, Tom Larracey, Joey’s uncle said that his nephew had been,” in a huddle after being hit during an earlier play.” Saying he felt dizzy, Larracey left the field. Apparently Larracey then began commenting that he “didn’t feel right.” Trainers attended to the football player, thinking he had a concussion, according to Mr. Larracey.
Taken to Morton Memorial Hospital in Taunton, an EKG revealed that there was something wrong with his heart. It was later discovered that Joey Larracey’s lungs were “filling with fluid.” Larracey died shortly thereafter. An investigation is underway.
This tragedy has impacted the entire Holliston community and students are urged to take advantage of the services made available at the high school.
